Route Details & Riding Tips

1. Hanoi to Pu Luong (The Scenic Way)

Avoid the dusty AH13 if possible. Instead, take the route through Thach That toward Cho Ben, then follow the edge of Cuc Phuong National Park.

  • The Road: Once you hit the Ho Chi Minh Road (QL21), the tarmac is excellent. The final stretch into Pu Luong via QL15C involves a steady climb with incredible views of the nature reserve.
  • Stopover: Grab a coffee in Cam Thuy before the final ascent.

2. Pu Luong to Mai Chau (Short but Sweet)

This is a short distance, giving you plenty of time to explore off the beaten path.

  • The Climb: If you are confident on a bike, try the steep road up to Son-Ba-Muoi. It’s often called the “Sapa of Thanh Hoa” due to its cool climate and misty peaks.
  • The Descent: Coming down into the Mai Chau valley provides a panoramic view of the Thai ethnic stilt houses and green (or golden) rice paddies.

3. Mai Chau to Hanoi (The Classic Pass)

  • Thung Khe Pass: Also known as White Stone Pass. It’s famous for its dramatic white cliffs and local food stalls at the top (try the com lam or grilled corn).
  • Hoa Binh Lake: For a more scenic return, detour through the small roads along the Da River toward the Hoa Binh Dam before hitting the CT08 highway back into the city.

Essential Checklist

  • Bike Check: Ensure your brakes and tires are in top shape; the descent from Thung Khe can be hard on the pads.
  • Weather: Pu Luong can be 5°C cooler than Hanoi. Pack a light windbreaker even in summer.
  • Rice Season: To see the terraces at their best, aim for late May/early June or late September/October.

Pro Tip: If you have an extra day, consider adding a loop through Lung Van (The Roof of Muong Land) between Pu Luong and Mai Chau for some of the best cloud-hunting spots in Northern Vietnam.
