Daily Breakdown

Day 1: Hanoi to Ba Be National Park (~230km)

Start early to escape Hanoi. Ride toward Ba Be Lake, the largest natural lake in Vietnam.

  • Activity: Take a late afternoon boat trip on the lake to see Puong Cave and the Dau Dang Waterfall.
  • Stay: A homestay in Pac Ngoi village (Tay ethnic people).

Day 2: Ba Be to Pac Bo Historical Site to Cao Bang City (~170km)

Head north toward the Chinese border.

  • Activity: Visit Pac Bo Cave and Lenin Stream, the historic location where Ho Chi Minh lived. The water here is incredibly turquoise and clear.
  • Stay: Cao Bang City.

Day 3: Cao Bang City to Mat Than Mountain to Ban Gioc Waterfall (~100km)

This is the most scenic day of the loop.

  • Activity 1: Visit Mat Than Mountain (Angel Eye Mountain). It’s a unique peak with a hole through it, surrounded by a lush valley.
  • Activity 2: Ride through Ma Phuc Pass to reach Ban Gioc Waterfall. Take a raft to the foot of the falls.
  • Activity 3: Explore Nguom Ngao Cave, one of the most beautiful limestone caves in the North.
  • Stay: Near Ban Gioc (Khai Mai or similar homestays) for a peaceful night.

Day 4: Ban Gioc to Me Pia Pass to Bao Lac (~160km)

A day for pure riding enthusiasts.

  • Activity: Experience the famous Me Pia Pass (14-storey pass). Park your bike and hike up to the viewpoint to see the zig-zagging road from above.
  • Stay: Bao Lac town.

Day 5: Bao Lac to Ha Long City (~300km)

This is a long transit day to set you up for your cruise.

  • Route: Ride back through Cao Bang City and head south via Lang Son toward the coast.
  • Note: If riding the whole way is too much, you can arrange a private van or truck for the bikes from Cao Bang City directly to Ha Long City (approx. 6–7 hours).Stay: Ha Long City (Bai Chay area) to be ready for an early morning cruise.

Day 6: Ha Long Bay Cruise and Return (~150km to Hanoi)

  • Activity: Book a 6-hour or 8-hour day cruise (departing around 8:00 AM or 12:00 PM). This will take you through Sung Sot Cave, Titop Island, and Luon Cave for kayaking.
  • Evening: Head back to Hanoi via the expressway (approx. 2.5 hours).

Travel Tips

  • March/April Weather: This is a great time to visit; the weather is generally dry and cool, though it can be foggy in the mountains.

The Motorbike Choice

1. The Premium Choice: CFMOTO 450MTAs of 2026, this is the “it” bike for Northern Vietnam. It strikes a rare balance between power and manageable weight.

  • Why it works: The 270-degree crankshaft gives you excellent low-end torque, which is a lifesaver when navigating the 14-storey Me Pia Pass. It’s much more stable on the paved highways leading to Ha Long Bay than smaller bikes.
  • Best for: Riders who want modern tech (ABS, traction control) and enough power to carry luggage or a pillion without breaking a sweat.

2. The “Gold Standard”: Honda CRF300L / CRF250L

The most popular choice for experienced adventure riders in Vietnam.

  • Why it works: It is incredibly lightweight and has long-travel suspension. If you encounter any “road works” (common in Cao Bang) or want to take a shortcut through a muddy valley near Mat Than Mountain, this bike will handle it better than anything else.
  • Best for: Solo riders who prioritize agility over highway speed. It’s “unbreakable” and can be fixed in almost any village.

3. The Practical Workhorse: Honda XR150L

The backbone of Vietnam’s rental fleets for a reason.

  • Why it works: It’s simple, air-cooled, and has a very comfortable, upright seat. While it lacks the “punch” of the 450MT, it is more than capable of completing the loop.
  • Best for: Budget-conscious riders or those who want a low-stress, “slow and steady” pace to soak in the views.

4. The Long-Distance Cruiser: Honda CB500X

If you plan on doing the long Day 5 transit from Bao Lac to Ha Long City by motorbike, this is your best friend.

  • Why it works: It’s a road-biased adventure bike. It’s exceptionally smooth on the tarmac but heavy for technical off-roading. It will make the long stretches toward the coast feel like a breeze.
  • Best for: Riders who prefer staying on the pavement and want maximum comfort for the long final leg.
